Col. H. JonesLietenaunt Colonel Herbet Jones was an officer of 2 Para during this confict. Jones saw action in Nortern Ireland before the Falklands war; which saw his accelerated promotion through the rank structure. Jones believed in leading from the front, this descision would both cost him his life and award him the posthumous Victoria cross. Jones led 2 Para through the assault at Goose Green. An attack designed to be a quick morale boost to report positively back to the media in London. The attack hit several problems. The Argentines were better organised than intelligence suggested. An attack that was supposed to take a night was still battling strong as dawn broke, leaving the men of 2 Para revealed and exposed. Col. H. Jones is remembered for a solo charge at the Argentine line, inspiring the men of 2 Para to follow and overrun the Argentine positions. |
A memorial for Jones marks the spot where he was killed. This memorial also commemorates the 17 other members of 2 Para who died during this battle.
