The Falklands WarThe Falklands conflict was an undeclared war between the United Kingdom and Argentina in 1982 over sovereignty of the Falklands Islands. It lasted for 79 days, ending in British victory, and caused the deaths of 255 British and 649 Argentinean servicemen and women. Argentinan soldiers invaded the islands on 2nd April, under orders from Leopoldo Galtieri (head of Argentina's Military Junta) in the hope that their recapture would unite the people of Argentina behind Galtieri's regime, which was in difficulty. In response Margaret Thatcher (Prime Minister of Britain and head of the War Cabinet) ordered the creation of a naval Task Force, which began the 8000 mile journey to recapture the islands on 5th April. A journey that would take 30 days alone. The Task Force entered the waters of the South Atlantic carrying 2 800 soldiers and 20 Sea Harrier aircraft; they would have to fight the entire Argentinean army, navy and air force to recapture the islands.
